About Asphalt Industry Alliance (MPA Asphalt)
The Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) is a promotional body formed in 2000 through a partnership between MPA Asphalt, part of the Mineral Products Association, and Eurobitume. Together these represent the suppliers of the raw materials used to produce asphalt, as well as asphalt producers and laying contractors. The AIA's press and information office is at Wrington near Bristol, while the Mineral Products Association, the trade association for the aggregates, asphalt, cement, concrete, lime and related industries, is based on Euston Road in London.
The AIA works to raise the profile of the need for government to invest in highways infrastructure, and particularly in road maintenance. It is a focal point for media enquiries on local road conditions, and with the Institute of Highway Engineers it supports the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Better Roads, taking the industry's messages to Parliament.
ALARM survey
Each year the AIA commissions the Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey of highway departments in England, including London, and Wales, which has run for more than 25 editions. It reports on funding and conditions on the local road network using information from the authorities responsible for maintaining it. The 2026 report, based on returns from 79% of local authorities, put the carriageway repair backlog at £18.62 billion.
MPA Asphalt says the UK industry produces more than 20 million tonnes of asphalt a year from nearly 300 plants and depots, and that asphalt surfaces around 95% of UK roads. MPA has also run collaborative research with bitumen suppliers and National Highways for several decades. The AIA publishes key facts, case studies and sharing best practice material on sustainable asphalt.
