About Melba Swintex
Melba Swintex is a UK manufacturer of temporary traffic management and road safety products, formed in 2007 by the merger of Swintex Ltd, which began trading in 1959 and made one of the first traffic cones, and Melba Products Ltd, founded in 1982. Swintex designed the first sand ballasted traffic cone in 1970, and the companies went on to develop one piece recycled cones, the first blow moulded pedestrian barrier and the Tuff Trench cover. In 2019 the company moved its main site from Derby Works in Bury to Stubbins Vale Mill in Ramsbottom, and it also operates Margaret Works in Rossendale.
Around 90% of the range is made from recycled material, and a closed loop scheme recycles end of life products. Since 2019 the company has funded UK woodland creation to offset delivery emissions.
Products include Chapter 8 and utility pedestrian barriers, traffic cones and cylinders, water filled barriers such as HOG600 and CityWall, road closure barriers, temporary signs and frames including the Q-Sign, Tuff Trench footway boards, fence bases, crowd barriers, access ramps, speed ramps, cable protectors and site bins. The Big Brother barrier system, designed for British Gas in 1993, is still supplied to National Grid.
