The Northstone brand was established in 2005, bringing together Ready Use Concrete, R J Maxwell and Son and Scott (Toomebridge), then part of the Farrans group. Its roots go back to 1900, when Robert Maxwell opened Bushtown Quarry near Coleraine, and to 1954, when Ready Use Concrete opened the first ready-mix plant in Northern Ireland at Ballygowan.
Products and contracting
The product range covers aggregates including high PSV stone, asphalt, ready-mix concrete and screeds including the CEVO low carbon range, concrete blocks, roof tiles, sand, limestone and lime. Asphalt products include thin surfacing systems, hot rolled asphalt, CE marked asphalt concrete, deferred set material and pre-coated chips, produced to BS EN 13108 in automated plants and delivered by the company's own fleet. The contracting division works on major infrastructure, commercial and residential sites, maintenance, airfields, public realm schemes and anti-skid, coloured and decorative surfacing. Its materials were used on the A6 scheme, and R J Maxwell completed the first phase of the A26 dual carriageway between Antrim and Ballymena in 1989.
