Overview
About Richard Carter Ltd
Richard Carter Ltd, trading as Carters, is a manufacturer of professional hand tools and replacement handles based at Neiley Works on New Mill Road in Honley, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. The ninth-generation family business was established in 1740 by Jeremiah Carter, a blacksmith in Highburton near Huddersfield, became a limited company in 1909 and moved from Dene Works in Kirkburton to the larger Neiley Works site in 1999 and 2000. A 9,000 square foot factory extension was added in 2015.
The company makes shovels, spades, forks, rakes, concrete placers, crowbars, chisels and other striking and hand tools for builders, contractors, farmers and landscapers, along with replacement handles. A woodturning department has been part of the business since 1865, and bespoke wood turning is still offered. Historically the company supplied the Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire coal mining industries, and broadened its customer base after the 1984 miners' strike.
Brands
Its Shocksafe range of electrically insulated tools is made to BS 8020:2011 for live working, with each tool flash tested to 10,000 volts and issued with its own certificate. In 2024 the company acquired Fynalite, a tool manufacturer, which widened its customer base and opened export opportunities, and in 2026 it signed a licence with JCB to produce and distribute JCB contractors and landscaping tools for the builders merchant market. It also sells natural bio-briquettes under a separate brand.
