Irish Salt Mining & Exploration Co. Ltd

The mine produces around 500,000 tonnes of de-icing rock salt a year and works continuously through the year to build a large stockpile ahead of winter. The company employs 59 full time staff and regularly uses outside contractors. Its rock salt conforms to BS 3247:2011 with a minimum sodium chloride content of 90 per cent, and fine grade rock salt treated with Safecote is available loose in bulk on request. Salt lumps for animals are also produced.

Supply and distribution

Salt Sales Company is the sales division of Irish Salt Mining and supplies road authorities and motorway maintenance contractors throughout the UK and Ireland, with more than 50 years of experience in winter supply. Salt is shipped from the company's own deep water jetty at Kilroot, which takes vessels up to 175 metres long and loads around 1,000 tonnes an hour, to the ports nearest customers' depots, cutting road haulage. Stockpiles are held at Glasgow, Ellesmere Port and Avonmouth, and local deliveries are made by bulk tipper through contracted hauliers.

The company displays ISO 9001 and FEMAS certification logos and publishes a health and safety policy statement.
