W J Horrod Ltd, which trades as Horrods, designs, manufactures, hires and services equipment for the mastic asphalt, roofing, bitumen and road marking trades. The family business is based at 1 Leaway, off Lea Bridge Road, London E10. It began in 1948 as a repair service, became a limited company in 1961, and is now run by two generations of the Horrod family.
Its product range includes hot air melters for rubber materials, SwiftMelt thermostat-controlled mastic asphalt mixers in 250kg, 500kg and 1000kg sizes, Safety Melt thermostat-controlled bitumen boilers, close-coupled, static and trailer-mounted mastic asphalt mixers, whiteliners and thermoplastic pre-heaters for road marking, hotboxes, LPG burners and torch kits. Alongside new equipment the company sells reconditioned machines, runs a hire fleet, offers service contracts and consultancy, and provides training on site or at its London workshop.
Its equipment is used in the roofing and highway sectors, in the UK and abroad. Projects named on the site include a bespoke SwiftMelt for the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, a mixer installed at Hackney College for CITB training, and safety and training support at Cork Airport. The company received the Mastic Asphalt Council's 2021 award for outstanding contribution to the industry, and its general manager is Gas Safe registered.
